That’s the “handicap principle” at play. Basically, it’s a way of saying “my genes are so good, I don’t really give a shit that what I’m doing is super bad for me.” This kind of behavior can be seen in a lot of animals who do clearly dangerous things in order to attract a mate. For example, some gazelle practice “stotting” in which the gazelle won’t directly run off when they first see a predator. Instead, they move slowly and do a few little hops in place as if to taunt the predator and imply that they’re so fast that they don’t need a head start to get away from them.

Of course, this all backfires horribly when you do actually get eaten by a lion/contract lung cancer. Anything to get laid I guess.
